Manilla: Never Miss a Bill Payment Again

I found a site! This site is called Manilla.com.

You can link all your billing accounts to your page and it shows you a summary of your bills, along with information such as whether each is paid, which bill is due, when it's due by, etc. It automatically updates this information. You are not required to manually input anything. I believe it also emails you and reminds you that a bill's due date is coming up and you still have to pay.

It has hundreds (or maybe it's thousands) of different accounts you can manage with Manilla. For example, you can add accounts like: FPL (electricity), AT&T U-verse, credit cards, student loan, etc.

A few months ago I had a LivingSocial certificate for a 3-hour kayak rental at Blue Moon Outdoor Center at Oleta River State Park in North Miami. It was set to expire the Sunday after my birthday, which was going to be a busy weekend. I was notified a couple of weeks before the expiration date so it really only left me with 2 weekends to choose from: one that was incovenient and then the weekend of my birthday (also inconvenient).

I called just before the last weekend to ask about extending the deadline another week. The answer was no. Then I asked if I could use the value that I had paid ($20) towards the regular full price. The answer was no. I was annoyed so I wrote the following email to the Blue Moon Outdoor Center:

Hello. I just called a few minutes ago about a LivingSocial deal that I purchased for a 3 hour kayak rental. It expired this weekend, which I only realized last week but was unable to to redeem. The person I spoke to told me that he was unable to extend the deadline to redeem the certificate but was only able to give me a 10% discount which would be a whopping $2.50 off a ONE hour kayak rental of $25. I think I should at least be offered a discount of the amount I already paid for the deal ($20) like other businesses do. 10% off something I already paid for is not an incentive. Please let me know what you can do for me. Thank you!

I got no response.

So, I decided to write to Living Social. Again...nothing.

Pretty much, in my mind, I have come to terms with the fact that $20 slipped out of my back pocket and was picked up by some lucky mofo who walked my path right after me.

The only difference between the outcome of that scenario and the actual one is that I all of a sudden decided that the next time I go rent a kayak, I won't be going to Blue Moon Outdoor Center because I have this weird feeling that they will rob me of $20 on top of whatever would be the price of my rental. Strange feeling to come out of no where, I know.

CityPockets: A Deal-Site-Addict's Savior

All those deal sites that exist now (Groupon, LivingSocial, etc) have forever changed the way I shop. Every time a new deal site is born into the world (which happens constantly), I sign up. By now, I probably subscribe to about 10 of them (that's for serious).

What that means for me is:
I'm constantly receiving different deals on all sorts of different products, services, restaurants, etc. Cheers to that! I get to try things I've always wanted to do but found too expensive at regular price (i.e. acupuncture).

BUT....
With all the different deal sites I subscribe to, it starts getting difficult for me to keep track of all my purchases that are just sitting and waiting to be used. Uber messy.

SO....
Someone who has been watching me and wanted to make me happy invented CityPockets.com.
CityPockets is a site where you pretty much keep all your different deal site accounts in order. They organize the different pending deals you've purchased but have not yet used; they display a list of different deals available for purchase; they give you the option of selling your unused deal; they're FRIGGIN awesome. Exactly what I needed!!!

I became a member at Massage Envy about 2 years ago. They have locations all over the US and if you’re a member you can use the facilities in any location. The benefits to being a member:

You get a prepaid massage once a month for $59 per month.
If you don’t use one of your massages by the next monthly billing, your massage rolls over and you accumulate them.

Right now I probably have about 5 prepaid massages waiting to be used up. I would love to go use ‘em up but unfortunately, I live in South Beach and the closest Massage Envy to me is in Coral Gables. That’s not really close by as it is, but even worse going through rush hour traffic after I get out of work. I finally made time to go get a massage the day before yesterday. As I was checking out after my massage, the lady was looking up my account to see if I had any prepaid massages to discount that day’s session and she said “Wow, you have a lot of prepaids available!” and I told her, “I know. You guys need to get a Massage Envy closer to where I live in South Beach.” The guy standing beside her was like “Oh, we’re opening a Massage Envy in South Beach in July.” WHAT?!?!? Someone heard me wish upon a freakin’ star! Then he said, “Yeah. Its gonna be on Alton and 15^th.” WHAT?!?! WHAT?!?!? That’s uber close to where I live (no specifics will be given out for all those stalkers out there who have any intention of trying to kidnap my adorable ass and perch me up on a shelf at home)! Not only will they be opening that one in South Beach…but they’ll also be opening one in Brickell…for anyone out there who lives near Brickell.

I love Mexican food. Its not hard to get me excited about a new Mexican restaurant in Miami. However, its also not that hard for me to end up disappointed. But you know what Mexican restaurant I tried recently that didn't disappoint me? Salsa Fiesta. It's. So. Good.
Its right off of Biscayne Blvd on 29th Street. I've already gone there like 5 times. I love their Nachos Fiesta with beef. Their food is highly satisfying.

One of my favorite parts of the experience: You can start munching right away while you're still looking over the menu. They have a platter of chips and the Hot Tamale dip at the counter between the cash registers. What I do is serve myself my own little container of their red salsa at the little serving station right next to the cash register and pick at the chips on the counter. I do love that salsa. I want it right now.

Second favorite part of the experience: The margaritas. SO GOOD. I love margaritas and I've actually never been one to stray from the original margarita on the rocks with plenty of salt...but the first time that I went to Salsa Fiesta, I ordered my regular Margarita and they showed up at my table with a strawberry margarita. What a pleasant mistake. I order it every time that I go now. Still with plenty of salt...and its heavenly.

Third favorite part of the experience: You order at the counter when you get there and then wait for your food at your table. Why doesn't every restaurant make you pay before you eat? Its so great to just get up and leave once your done with your food.

My one complaint about Salsa Fiesta? Their margaritas are like $13. Come on now, people. Its not like we're at a club on South Beach. Thats a ridiculous price for a drink at a little restaurant on Biscayne Blvd. Don't believe the price on the menu. I think thats only referring to happy hour specials. End result is I normally can't order more than 1 margarita with my food because I don't want to be homeless next month.

How I Fixed the Nook "User not activated" Error

Yesterday I wrote a blog on my Thoughts on My New Nook E-reader and mentioned how I kept getting a "User not activated" error every time I tried to open a book on my Nook. Well, I fixed the problem last night! Just one simple list of instructions wasn't fixing my problem because they weren't written for people with Macs. We have other steps we need to follow in addition to the list they shared. Should you be someone that stumbled upon this post because you're experiencing the same problem, this was the solution that worked for me:

On a mac, one of the folders you need to delete will be hidden because it begins with a period. Use these instructions to show all files on a mac so you can see that folder (i'll tell you exactly which folders to delete in a second).

1. Make sure "Adobe Digital Editions" is closed

2. Connect Nook to Mac

3. Go into the Nook drive that opens on your desktop.

4. Delete these directories in the Nook drive: "Digital Editions" and ".adobe_digital_editions" folder

5. Empty the "Trash"

6. Open "Adobe Digital Editions"

7. Reauthorize

Thoughts on My New Nook E-Reader

I received my Nook E-reader in the mail last week. T’was a very exciting day. Just the look of it got me giddy. It’s sleek, white and uber modern looking. Every time you put it on Sleep mode (or it goes on Sleep mode due to idleness), it shows the screensaver, a “sketched” portrait of a different author (there are other screensavers but that’s all I’ve gotten so far). Most importantly, its kinda touch screen. I say “kinda” cuz there’s a navigational screen at the bottom from which you control your selections on the actual “bigger” screen. That little navigational screen is in color. Yay to color!

Other things that I’m excited about with the Nook are:

It allows you to browse the Barnes & Noble Book Store directly from your Nook when you are inside a B&N store. You can read books on your Nook for up to 1 hour for free from inside Barnes & Noble.
I like that you can use the Internet on your Nook.
It has LendMe Technology, which allows you to share your books with someone else for up to 14 days. Most e-readers have this feature and there are social networks that cater to e-book lending.
Battery life is great

Now here is a frustration I’ve been having with my Nook:

Before I got my Nook, I was using another e-reader called Literati from The Sharper Image. I purchased and downloaded a couple of books from Kobo.com during my time with my ex-reader. Now, I’ve attempted to transfer those books to my Nook, and while they do show up in my library, every time I attempt to open the books, I get a message that says “User not activated.” Apparently they are referring to “Adobe Digital Editions User”. I’ve found forums where people give directions on how to get rid of this “User Not Activated” message, but quite honestly, I don’t understand what the hell they are saying.

Result:

It’s been a week and I haven’t been able to use my Nook for anything else other than playing Sudoku (partly due to my lack of patience for resolving the issue and I haven’t tried to read any other books aside from those I transferred from Kobo.com). But, hey, it still looks really pretty! But, fo’ reals, I will fix it. Maybe I’ll give it another go today. If anyone knows what I have to do to get around this “User not Active” hump, please do let me know!

I have become obsessed with Bruno Mars. Embarrassingly so. I don't even recognize myself! I feel like a young teenager who isthisclose to putting his posters up on my wall and searching through the different celebrity addresses in Tiger Beat so I can write him fan mail. But no. Keep it cool, Me! You'd be one in a million who already do that.
No, but really, I'm not a groupie bitch. Never have been. Yeah, i get excited if I see anyone mildly famous, but that's only when I'm in their presence. Also, as my best friend kindly pointed out, I'm an "old bitch" and I need to quit. Not old - but too old for this behavior.
So what makes Bruno Mars so fascinating to me? For starters, I fell in love with his voice since I heard "Billionaire." Then I saw him. I was surprised to see that he bears a striking resemblance to my boyfriend. They even have a similar style - which I appreciate. Ahhh, he's a version of my boyfriend who sings beautifully. Hot. What's Up with the Huge Pink Snails around Miami Beach?

A couple of days ago I started noticing some big, bold, magenta-colored snails placed in random spots around Miami Beach. I asked my boyfriend about them and he said maybe they had something to do with Art Basel. Maybe.

Then I asked my sister-in-law. She said "I don't know! But now that I hear you say "Pink Snails" out loud, I realize that I saw a sign that said Pinksnails.com and I thought 'What a weird name for a salon'." Jackpot!

Its called the REgeneration Art Project by the Cracking Art Group (an international art collective) and the Galleria Ca d'Oro in Rome. The project placed 45, enormous pink snails in Miami Beach, and they'll be here until January. The snail is used to symbolize nature and they are made up of recycled artificial material. The purpose is to make people question their meaning (of course) and start talking about them to one another. Ultimately, they'd find out the meaning of the snails and start thinking about the impact that recycling has on the environment. Then, hopefully, us residents of Miami Beach will become motivated to rebuild our city in a fun, animated way with consideration for our environment.

My Favorite Free Android Apps

Apps were invented to do all the things that make my life just a tad bit easier. They compare prices of a products at local stores for me, they download music, they organize my shopping lists and to-do lists...Also, I don't believe in downloading apps that you have to pay for...so, it's my belief that the best apps are free. Following are my favorite, must-have apps.

Calorie Counter - This app functions like a food journal. Enter your current weight, goal weight and other like information to get your recommended daily caloric intake. Then log your meals in the food journal. You can enter it by scanning the barcode or doing a search for that particular product (brand, size, etc.). It automatically fills in the nutritional value information and adds it to your day's calorie count.

Craigslist (AKA Craigsnotifications) - Awesome app. Create saved searches and receive notifications every time a new posting is added. The end.

gReader - Read all the blogs you follow on Google Reader from your phone. It also can send you notifications when a blog post is added.

MusicBox - Download Mp3s

Notes - This is the app that allows you to write down and save information you want/need at a future time without scrambling for a pen and paper.

OI Shopping - Create multiple shopping lists in this app and name them (grocery list, christmas list, etc.) Once you buy the item on your list, you simply tap the checkbox next to it to add a check mark.

PhoneFlicks - (For Netflix users) Update your queue, rate movies and do most things you can do on Netflix. Only thing I wish it did was let me what movies on Instant Play from my phone :(

Shazam - Of course. Everyone with an iPhone or Android has to have Shazam. If you like the song playing on the radio, run Shazam to get the name of the song and the artist.

Sherpa - I am not sure, but I think this app may be exclusive to MyTouch users. Search different categories of locations nearby (restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, etc). Selecting any of the venues listed on Sherpa normally returns options like Call, Directions, Reviews and more.

Shopper - Scans the cover of books, CDS, DVDs or barcodes and searches Google to locate the different online/nearby stores that sell the item and lists the prices. You may also search by name.

ShopSavvy - Scans barcodes or searches by product name to find a list of nearby/online stores that sell the items and how much they sell them for. I'm not sure which is better of Shopper or ShopSavvy, so I'll keep both till I figure it out.

Taskos - Yay! One of my favorites, because I'm a to-do list LOSER. Keep all your to-do's in this list and check them off once they're completed.

Guess what? Bill Maher is fuckin retarded. Yes...retarded. And all of his audience members who blindly follow him and applaud every dumb thing he says are dumb as shit, too. Think for yourself.
It's not that I simply disagree with his opinions, because whether I disagree or not, I try to respect other people's opinions. And, anyways, I feel I relate more to liberals than conservatives. What I do not relate to, though, are people who belittle others with differing opinions; people who think they know everything there is to know about everything. Having that attitude makes you stupid - in my opinion, of course ;).
Bill Maher is not really open to hearing opposing arguments; "listening" to someone talk only to follow it up with a condescending response is not really listening with an open mind. He speaks with some sort of authority that originated in his own asshole. You should be more open to other people's opinions, because yours are no better than anyone else's - especially if you're just a dumb ass who makes a living off being an arrogant, hard-headed, ignorant shit.

I came across this Freekibble site that is petitioning to make April 30th National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. May not be a huge deal, but you don't have to do much to send the "letter" to President Obama. You just click on the little red box on the bottom right that says "Click Here to Email Our Letter to the President" and then you just type in your name, city and email address and submit! They want to get as many letters in as possible by September 30th.

The last couple of months I've been able to purchase things I always wanted but could never afford. Why? Because of these local coupon/discount sites that offer popular products and services at super cheap prices. The trick is, you have to purchase the deal within the time frame they give you. Normally, it will last for about 24 hours. Each of these sites have multiple cities they cater to. Choose the city you want deals in and it will only send you deals relevant to that location. Sign up in any of these sites and receive daily deals in your email. So far, I've bought 3 power plate sessions for $60, an acupuncture session for $30, 5 yoga classes for like $25, mani/pedi at some swanky salon for $19 and other things. I HIGHLY recommend these sites. At least sign up to see what they have to offer you...if you don't want to buy any of the deal (which I really doubt is true), you don't have to.

I would just like to say that horoscopes are bullshit. I always thought so but given the good news I was supposed to be expecting yesterday, I decided I would hope and believe and maybe it would be right this time. My horoscope (for Cancer) said that I was going to get some sort of increase in income yesterday in form of a new career venture (i.e. opening up my own company - which, by the way, I did 2 years ago). Being that I knew I would not be opening my own company yesterday, I decided that my income increase would come in the form a raise at my current job. Oh how I eagerly awaited to be called into the boss's office to be told the good news. Still waiting :/

The Harsh Reality

I have no idea why anybody would sign up to do such a thing, but there is always someone who will. This site that I recently learned about called failin.gs is a place where people can set up a profile for themselves and invite friends to anonymously tell them how they really feel about their personalities. I, personally, can be pretty hard on myself (as my father says, “my own worst critic”), so I don’t need anyone to help pull my ass down to earth. Sorta how the Facebook status update bar asks “What’s on your mind?” the failin.gs homepage has its main, central question in large, bolded font: “What is wrong with me?”

Seriously? Am I the only person who doesn’t get this? Although they describe it as a place to receive “constructive criticism” so we may improve, it feels like a place to butcher your self esteem. No thanks. I’d like a site that allows someone to pet me and tell me I’m the best. Now, don’t get it twisted, if someone I know creates a profile, I’ll participate in the “constructive criticism.” After all, if they sign up for this crap, they’re asking for it; I just won’t be the person with the profile.

I recently came across a really cool site/product called Ceevee that allows you to have your resume online and your own URL free of charge. Aside from free registration, putting it together is really, really simple. I can't wait to be able to just copy and paste my URL into the body of an email. No more attaching! Woohoo! And you can tell people in conversation to just look up your URL instead of having to send them an email. It makes it easier to get my resume out there to more people. Get 'er done at Ceevee.com.

The Lemonade Movie

I went to a film presentation tonight at the Books & Books in Coral Gables for a film called Lemonade. It is about creative advertising professionals who were laid off in this recession and their innovative approach to making a living. It was amazing! The film has not yet been released but I highly recommend it to anyone who is unemployed, hates their job or is unsure about what to do with their life. Its hope-reviving and totally inspiring. I feel like quitting my job and doing my own thing!..(whatever that may be). The writer of the film, Eric Proulx (who is also featured in the film), was there to present it. You can sign up to be notified when the film comes out at lemonademovie.com and watch the trailer there, too. Be prepared to feel the urge to do something crazy and a little wreckless. Why I Love the MyTouch!

It’s been a couple of weeks since I got my new Mytouch and I gotta say…I am NOT sad. I thought I might miss having my cool sidekick that opens up like a switch blade, but no. Most of the differences that I have experienced with the Mytouch are good.
Pros:

Love the apps! I didn’t even understand what apps were a few weeks ago. I would always hear about them: “Apps this, apps that” but I just had no interest in finding out what they were. Well, I get it now. I love them!!! AND…so many of them are FREE!!!

You can open multiple windows in your web browser (sidekick didn’t let me do this)

There are only a couple of things I have some difficulty with.

Typing on the touch screen; I was so used to the QWERTY board that I could type without looking. Now, the touch screen in combination with the automatic spell checker has made me send a couple of texts to my boyfriend that say “Mean!” instead of “Mwa!”

The Camera has no flash :(

Despite these cons, I LOVE the Mytouch! It has great battery life, so many entertaining options and lots of free stuff…myfavorite.

What Sidekick Users Deserve

I am one of the many unfortunate t-mobile sidekick users who have lost so much of their personal information. I have been a loyal sidekick owner who has upgraded from one model to another and just could not see myself going to anything else that didn’t have that special swivel screen that flips open. Even before being a loyal sidekicker, I was a loyal T-mobile customer for several years. As many people have pointed out, this recent service disruption that sidekicks have undergone has been highly inconvenient, especially for those who have conducted business and stored business contacts and information on their sidekick device. But…let us not forget that it’s still very inconvenient for those who don’t. Most of us have stored important information including contacts, to-do lists, appointments, deadlines, account numbers and passwords on what we thought was our device; not the technology cloud on the manufacturer’s database.

T-mobile is proposing to pacify sidekick users with a $20 data credit as well as $100 gift card that may be used towards T-mobile products or bills. T-mobile should act as if their customers’ time and loss is worth something more than that. After losing so much personal information as well as enduring what felt like a long week of no internet access among other features, sidekick users deserve more.

Sidekick users who stay with T-mobile should be allowed to upgrade to the myTouch for free. I don’t think it is fair that as a result of the trouble we were caused, that we would have to pay to get the new phone (even after factoring in the $100 credit) AND our monthly data service charges will go from $20 to $35. Sidekick users will end up paying more money per month due to the inconvenience caused to them. It would be more than fair for T-mobile to allow users to upgrade to a myTouch for free while adjusting the monthly data fee to match the one that we currently have for sidekick. Forget the $100. That is still T-mobile profiting from a grand error.

Annoying Things People Say, Misuse or Mispronounce

I get annoyed pretty easily. This is a fact. Some of the things I can’t stand are when people mispronounce common words, when they use obnoxious phrases or they just say stupid shit that even my 5 year old niece knows better than to say.

I can understand to a certain degree that many people may be ignorant of the disease but…lets get this lesson out of the way already…its…Alzheimer’s Disease. Yes, old-timers are usually the victims of it but…no, that’s not what it’s called.

A few days ago, while I was getting my nails “did”, I got into a slightly discouraging debate with my nail lady and two of her clients regarding couples and “forever afters”. The debate was 3 against one (one, being me). On the other team: A 34-year old married woman who we will call Rosie; a gay man who has been in a domestic partnership for 8 years (we’ll call him Tim); and then there was my nail lady (we’ll call her Jackie) who is divorced and currently living with her boyfriend and his two kids.
Tim is about 40 years old and very committed to his partner. Tim told me that he strongly believes (and always has) that no two people are meant to be together for the rest of their lives. He said that people change and grow apart. His parents have been married for 44 years and he has asked them over a dozen times to get a divorce. He said that humans are animals…and only like 2 species of animals mate with one mate for life. I argued that my parents have been married for almost 40 years and are still very much up each other’s assholes. They go everywhere together and my dad doesn’t know what to do with himself when he is without my mom. Tim merely acknowledged that as an exception to the rule. The others agreed with him that it was “unnatural” for two people to live their lives faithfully dedicated to only each other.
Yes, people do change as time goes on but, I think the best way to deal with that situation is to expect it and prepare for it so that when it comes, you recognize it and can ride it out. I think people’s feelings will rise again like a rollercoaster. If you wait, it will come again. I think it is possible to grow together and not grow apart. You also need to know and expect that the relationship will change and the kind of love will change…but you have to know that it is coming. Those who are not willing to sacrifice the type of love that you feel at the beginning of a relationship are the people who will not be able to sustain a long term relationship because they will just keep thinking they’ve fallen out of love.
Jackie and Rosie believe it goes against our nature to be with one person forever and say that is why it is so easy to stray and there is so much infidelity (even when you love someone). Difficult…it is. And sometimes, it is attempted with the wrong person. Marriage is definitely not just rainbows and butterflies. I am fully aware that it is a lot of work and effort. You must know beforehand that there will be times when you will doubt your feelings for the other person and even go through phases where you might feel like you can’t stand them. Marriage or any “forever after” requires sacrifice and a lot of compromises. You will quickly come to realize that you are not living your life just as you please anymore…there is someone else to consider now besides yourself.
I acknowledge that we, as humans, will continue to lust and have normal human thoughts. This is why it is “difficult” and requires work. The fact that it is difficult may make it seem that it is “unnatural” because it is not our natural instinct. Fine. It’s not our natural instinct but why is anyone faithful? It is not for ourselves…and it’s not because it’s our natural inclination. Commitment and loyalty is more like a meaningful gift that someone can give to the person they love to show their respect for the relationship and allowing the relationship to remain…respectable.

How Are We Supposed to Find the Time to Travel and Work?

Some things in life just don't balance out. I spend most of my day, week and month at work so that I can make money to live. Aside from bills and basic necessities, the money I work hard for can go towards pleasures, hobbies and anything from partying to a home or luxury car. For me, travel is the ideal place to put my money. I studied abroad in Europe a couple of times and ever since, I get this itch every so often to travel again. That itch normally comes every two years or so.

About a year ago, I started writing full-time for a travel/tourism company. I spend all day writing about top vacation destinations, exotic places, isolated beaches, crystal clear waters and amazingly beautiful natural areas. After researching and browsing pictures of each place, I find myself yearning to go to places I never thought anyone would ever want to go to. I want to go to Idaho? Bizarre. I currently have a list forming of places that I want to make a point to visit. Aside from the destinations I've never seen, I often daydream about returning to the places I have been and previously fell in love with. I want to sit on the gorgeous Ponte Vecchio in Florence Italy at night with a bottle of wine listening to a street entertainer sing and play his guitar; I want to walk around the distinctly gorgeous city of Venice; I want to live in Barcelona and enjoy a cafe con leche and tostada for breakfast and the sight of the ancient streets as well as the modern, high-end store fronts; I can go on for a while. After spending an entire day teased by tempting vacations that I have to write about, I end up frustrated at the fact that taking time off from work is frowned upon. At my job, we get zero days of vacation time and 3 sick days for the first year...and I work in a TRAVEL AND TOURISM company. Go figure. I write about places I have never seen.

Although every part of me wanted to graduate, start a career and make money without looking back more than anyone I knew...I now find myself yearning for the days that I was able to study abroad for a month at a time or take a vacation without worrying that I would get fired from school. If you don't work, you have all the time in the world but usually not the funds to afford to travel. If you do work, you have the money to travel but not the time. Damned if you do, damned if you dont. If you are someone who has a job that allows you to accumulate time and take it all of in a big chunk of time (like a month) or your career has a flexible schedule where you can easily schedule a good amount of time off (nurses, firefighters, etc.), that's awesome and this is not a problem you have to deal with. For the rest of us, we have to think outside the box and find ways around this obstacle. Otherwise, we will be pissed and bitter about the inability to use our money as we please. A few things you can do to squeeze out a healthy chunk of vacation time:

Combine vacation days with holidays
Schedule your time off the day before or after a company paid holiday. This way a week's worth of vacation time can be easily turned into a week-and-a-half-long vacation.

Work Abroad
Not the easiest option but probably the best. Aside from the fact that living abroad is a fulfilling vacation experience in itself, many other countries have a very different, more flexible work and vacation policy. Travel on very affordable forms of transportation with a generous amount of allowed time.

Do contract work and travel between contracts
Work by contract (freelance, per project) so you can get income as well as an open schedule at the end.

Take time off between jobs
Start saving now so that if you foresee or unexpectedly find yourself without a job, you can schedule a long vacation before you start a new job. Take a month, two months...whatever you can afford.

Use vacation days plus Leave Without Pay (LWP)
Combine your paid vacation days with Leave Without Pay days

Working at Foreign companies
There are a few, special companies right here in the United States that are actually European, Australian or other nationalities with an office here. Some of these companies practice the vacation policies from back home and allow up to 7 weeks of paid vacation. For example, I have read about a British company that allows 4 weeks of paid vacation and urges employees to take every last minute of it. Nice.

I’m not a doctor or psychologist. I don’t claim to know as much as a doctor or psychologist. I am simply someone who previously fell victim to depression and anxiety. I always thought it would be helpful to get insight from someone who had recovered from depression or anxiety themselves and could give me the ability to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I often tried to find relief or answers by researching online. I found a lot of websites advertising different books, CDs or DVDs claiming to have the secret to solve all my problems. Maybe they did…but I wasn’t willing to pay money to find out if they were more than gimmicks. Plus, I was looking for something very specific. I wanted to know how to accelerate my journey to “normalcy” while on antidepressants. Nothing that I would have to worry about combining or conflicting with the medication. I wanted natural depression remedies. Below are tips to do just that, which I have gathered from research and my own personal experience. I do as many of these natural depression remedies as possible on a regular basis. I think it’s best to attack depression and anxiety from all angles.

1. Meditation
I started practicing guided meditation once a week at a yoga studio. To be honest, I wasn’t sure it was helpful at first. Over time, I got better at relaxing and meditating and I realized why it’s helpful. Meditation is all about practicing the ability to clear your mind and think about nothing at all. Through practice, it’s easier to control your thoughts and even switch them on or off when necessary. Don’t get discouraged when you start if you can’t control your thoughts while meditating. It took me a few months to get the hang of it. Ideally, you should meditate once a day. Download a guided meditation track, lay back and follow it on a daily basis.

2. Pranayama

Pranayama is a form of yoga that is used to reduce stress and anxiety. Pranayama is different breathing and sound exercises. Search online to see if there’s a place near you that offers Pranayama.

3. Yoga
I’m sure you’ve already heard that exercise releases endorphins and promotes happy moods. Yoga does that while incorporating a pure and spiritual ambiance which, if nothing else, is soothing. You’ll also like the improvement in your physique.

4. Jog, Speed walk or just get active
Cardio is known to enhance the effects of antidepressants. If you can’t bring yourself to do something like jogging or taking a walk, plan an activity that requires exercise. For example, make plans with friends to go kayaking. Try an aerial trapeze class. I’ll warn you in advance…you may wish you hadn’t made the plans when its time to get ready and go but you’ll be happy you did after. Make yourself do it. Make the plans with a group. That way you’re more unlikely to back out.

5. Going to the Beach

Believe it or not there is such a thing as a beach addiction. The reason this is possible is because Ultraviolet rays release endorphins. Therefore, people get hooked on a high that they’re unaware of. I’ll try anything that they say might be helpful. Plus, maybe my tan will make me happy.

6. Writing
Journaling is another popularly recommended tip. It serves as a release and helps sort out your thoughts, which can get lost in the fuzz when you’re depressed.

7. Go out

People suffering from depression would rather stay home and mope or “relax.” Force yourself. You may not even have fun while you’re out but after a few attempts, you will. Keep going.

8. Do something creative
I started painting which I’ve never done before. It was a distraction. I was very focused on coming up with new ideas and art that would decorate my apartment and the homes of my family members. Put your focus on other creative things like decorating your home, improving pieces of furniture, making something cool out of something you were going to simply throw away.

9. Sex
An orgasm releases endorphins and keeps you on a natural high for a few hours.

10. Massage
A massage gets me in a calm and feel-good mood. It’s so soothing and feels great. Turns out that, this too, releases endorphins. Yay to this one!

11. Laughter

A good, hard laugh does wonders for your overall mood. Watch funny movie, go to a comedy show or hang out with someone who tends to make you laugh.

12. Chocolate or a hot pepper

You may have already heard about chocolate causing your brain to release endorphins. Apparently, a hot pepper releases endorphins too. If you can bring yourself to do so, chew on one.

13. Things you like

Enjoy art of your taste, listen to music and do things you like.

14. Go on a Rollercoaster
Just do it.

15. Watch a scary movie

Weird, I know. According to something I read, a good spook and scream can do good. My view on it: You’ll know if you’re ready for this. If you don’t feel up to watching a scary movie, don’t.

There have been all kinds of beauty myths and warnings about make-up, hair and skin. I’m sure you have heard your share. I researched a few and below I have separated some of the most common beauty myths from the facts.

Drinking plenty of water clears up skin break-outs.
False. Water does hydrate your skin but it really does not have any association with the appearance of (or lack-there-of) blemishes.

If you do not take off your mascara, your lashes will fall off.
Yes. The mascara will clog the lash follicles and they will start to break.

It is important that you wash your face in the morning and at night even if you do not have any make-up on.
True. I know this can be a pain, especially when you’re tired and just want to fall asleep at night or you wake up and rush out the door because you’re running late or you just like to sleep till the very last possible second. Maybe some quick facial cloths can be the solution.

The best place to match a foundation to your skin tone is on your inner wrist.
Wrong-o. The best place to test the shade of foundation is on your jaw line. Take the color of your chest into consideration as well.

You should throw out make-up products after a certain period of time.

Nope. There is no specific life expectancy for make-up products. Just use your best judgment for this and be aware of any changes in the consistency, color and smell of the product.

The proper amount of sleep will get rid of under-eye circles or puffiness.
Sorry, Charlie. Nope. There are products you can use that will help but sleep is not a natural remedy.

Trim your hair every 6 to 8 weeks to keep hair healthy.
Not necessary. In order to keep your hair healthy, just take care of your hair. When split ends appear (which could be up to 12 weeks later), then give it a trim.

Rinse your hair with water before going into a pool to reduce damage.
Yup. You don’t want the first thing that your hair absorbs to be chlorine.

It is best to wash hair once a week.
True-dis. Your scalp’s natural oils are the best conditioner for your hair.

Spritzing water on your face freshens up make-up.
Hell no. All it does is potentially smear or streak.
